The story behind the painting
This painting is a very special commission from a client who lives in London and wanted to preserve a memory of his time in the city. Although he still lives here, he told me that when he eventually leaves, he wants to have an artwork that evokes these years and the places that have been part of his life.
One of those places is Noor Jahan, one of his favourite restaurants situated in South Kensington and considered a true culinary landmark in London, known for serving delicious dishes crafted with great care.
One evening, as he was walking past the restaurant, he noticed a white Porsche parked right at the entrance. The combination of the streetlamp’s warm glow, the night-time atmosphere, and this unmistakable London scene captured his attention. He took a photograph and, some time later, asked me if I could turn that moment into a painting.
Based on that first image, as well as additional photos he sent me of the restaurant by day and by night, I was able to recreate the atmosphere he envisioned: an intimate memory filled with warm light, movement and life.
The Creative Process
To create this piece, I chose a medium format of 40 × 50 cm, ideal for working on fine details while maintaining the feeling of an urban scene. The main challenge was capturing the night-time light: the glow of the restaurant, the street lamp, and the soft reflections on the car.
I began by preparing the canvas with an imprimatura in raw umber tones, which removes the pure white of the canvas and creates a soft, uniform base. Then I applied a first monochromatic underpainting which allowed me to establish the composition, volumes, and all the key points of light and shadow before moving on to colour.
From this solid foundation, I built the painting layer by layer, using a reduced palette: whites, blacks, ochres, greys, and warm earth tones, with small touches of red to balance the warmth of the scene. The painting blends meticulous details, such as the restaurant sign or the lines of the car, with more atmospheric areas, such as the interior of the restaurant.
The result is a piece where light is the true protagonist, a painting that requires patience, precision, and a gradual, layered process to reach its final harmony.
