The story behind the illustration


For many years, I’ve spent part of my summers in the Cotswolds, and Lechlade is one of
the most beautiful villages near my home. This village has a little Christmas shop that
stays open all year round, filled with lights, ornaments and beautiful details. The magic of
this place has truly captured my heart.
One day, as I walked past, a small sculpture of a girl walking her dog caught my attention.
That image immediately inspired me: I imagined an elegant woman strolling with her dog
in front of the shop window, holding her gifts and surrounded by the magic of Christmas.
This scene became the inspiration for my illustration Christmas Shop, one of my most
iconic and beloved Christmas images.

The Creative Process


As with many of my illustrations, I begin with pencil sketches on paper, trying different
compositions, erasing, redrawing and adjusting until I find the one that feels right. Then I
transfer the drawing onto special watercolour paper and outline it with a fine permanent
ink pen.
In this case, I painted it using gouache, a water-based technique with more concentrated
pigments than watercolour, giving the piece a matte and opaque finish. Once the
painting is dry, I scan it and make the final adjustments in Photoshop, refining colours,
adding subtle highlights and giving the illustration its final touch.
This work, born from a memory and a deeply personal inspiration, is for me a small
celebration of the charm and magic of Christmas. It’s now available as a limited edition
poster, as well as on greeting cards, mugs and other festive products.
